Preparing For The Unknown

So I was reflecting about how each photo session has been such a different experience, which makes my job as a photographer more interesting. However you can't quite prepare for the unknown. Sure I can prepare my equipment, check out the weather, even in some cases I can get familiar with the location and lighting. But I never know just how the session will play out. One of my more common situations I've had to handle is a child not wanting their picture taken. Well as a mom that has two children who on most days don't like me to take their picture, I've had a lot of experience in this situation. Although experience doesn't always mean that you will be able to get the child to cooperate, as every child is different. One thing that does help no matter what the situation, is patience, allowing the child to feel comfortable and a few fun props never hurt. It's important not only for me as the photographer but for the parents to keep this in mind as well. Pushing a child to where they feel uncomfortable will only make matters worse (as I'm sure you already know) and it never helps to get mad as they will sense your frustration. So as hard as it is we need to stay calm and allow the child space when needed. Besides this can be a great opportunity to get some candid shots, either while the child is playing by themselves or with the interaction of the parents trying to make the child happy. So never fret, you will get some amazing pictures with me as your photographer no matter what the situation!
